Since the start of the awards program in 1987, some 3,200 high school students from 322 school districts have been named researchers from all states. Three high schools will hold their first high school: Stuart, Sweetwater and Pathways Middle College High School in Oklahoma City.

Each of the All-Staters this year will receive a prize of $ 1,000 based on merit and a medallion. All-Staters will be recognized at the Foundation's 32nd Annual Academic Awards Banquet on Saturday, May 19 at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in Norman.

David L. Boren, president and founder of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, describes the selection of scholars as "the most rigorous academic competition in Oklahoma." To be nominated for the Academy in all states, students must meet one of the following criteria: combined university test score (ACT) of at least 30; a combined score in reading, writing and math based on SAT evidence of at least 1340; or be selected as a semifinalist for a National Award, National Achievement or National Hispanic Award.

This year's All-Staters achieved an average score of 33.4 on ACT, with eight winners achieving a perfect score of 36. The overall student average was 4.24. In addition, 30 of this year's All-Staters are semifinalists of national merit, and three are national Hispanic scholars.

All college students are appointed by their principals or superintendents and are selected on the basis of academic results, extracurricular activities and community participation, as well as an essay submitted by each candidate. The selection committee, chaired by Teresa B. Adwan, retired attorney from Tulsa, works independently of all the other activities of the foundation. The committee members are a diverse group of business, education and civic affairs leaders, as well as former recipients of the Academic Awards Program.

The Academic Awards Banquet is open to the public, with an entrance fee of $ 50. The awards ceremony will be broadcast nationwide by OETA, the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority.
